Albert Keen, by this time a well-known personality in the Herald Square Theatre District, launched Keens Chophouse on his own in 1885. Keens quickly evolved into a popular meeting place for celebrities.
Between acts at the nearby Garrick Theatre, actors in full theatrical makeup ran via the back door to "fortify" themselves. By the time Keens celebrated its 20th anniversary, the merry crowds of producers, playwrights, publishers, and newspaper men who attended Keens were visible from the Pipe Room.
The Herald Square Theatre District's sole surviving as of the present is Keens. Finding one historical site still standing is consoling in a time when so much of the past is being destroyed.
